More particularly you will notice the "Palmyra Gate",
the only one that opened towards the plateau (the two others were
oriented towards the river). From there started the main artery of the
city. The synagogue, founded at the end of the 2nd century or early in
the 3rd century, was leaning against the wall, at the left of the
Palmyra Gate. It was still decorated with paintings probably executed
between 245 and 256.
Towards the city center, 300 m. from the Palmyra Gate, there is the
temple of Artemis Nanaya, a vast sanctuary more of Babylonian than
Hellenistic type, and opposite, the temple of Astargatis near a meeting
place for the merchants and leaders of Palmyranian caravans. The
citadel, built on a rocky hill, has been partly destroyed by floods, but
its impressive walls on the city side flanked with powerful towers are
still standing. |
