A long straight tar surfaced road cutting through the
desert linking Damascus to Deir-Ezzor and the Djezirah a land of the
greatest economic achievements of the regime in the last 20 years- has
put Palmyra at less than three hours from the capital (about 240 km.)
and multiplied the frequency of buses serving it. It would therefore be
a real pity to overlook this queen of the desert. As regarding the
"Desert Palaces", you can reach one of them, the Qasr El-Heir EI-Gharbi
if you have a car at your disposal to make a detour of some thirty
kilometers off your way to Palmyra.
A stop at Dmeir, one of the sites already mentioned
with Damascus, is equally recommended during your trip. To visit the
second palace, the Qasr El-Heir EI-Sharqi, is more difficult. It needs a
sturdy vehicle and a driver who is well acquainted with the tracks in
the maze of traces left by vehicles seeking the best route. For this
trip, you must hire a Jeep and driver at Palmyra and dedicate a full day
to the excursion. It is particularly attractive in the very early spring
when the desert blooms with flowers. |
